You do not need administrator rights to install or run ghfs. It runs without extra setup or dependency downloads.
Follow these steps to get ghfs running on your Windows PC.

Look for the Releases section on the page. This may be on the right side or under the main repository description.

Find the latest release version. Click on it.

Download the Windows installer file. The file will usually end with

Once downloaded, double-click the installer file to start.

Follow the on-screen instructions. Choose where you want to install ghfs if asked.

When installation finishes, open ghfs from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
After installing ghfs:

You will be asked to connect your GitHub account. This step lets ghfs access your issues and pull requests.
- Click Sign in.
- A browser window will open asking you to log in to GitHub.
- Enter your GitHub username and password.
- Approve the access request.

After signing in, select the repository you want to work with. You can type its name or pick from your list.

ghfs will create a folder on your computer simulating that repository's issues and pull requests.

You can open that folder in File Explorer. You will see files named after issues or pull requests.

Double-click a file to read the issue description or comment.

Edit text files to add comments or close issues. Save your changes.

When you are online, press the Sync button in ghfs to update GitHub with your changes.
- Open your local folder
- Double-click any issue file
- Read the details without needing internet
- Select multiple issue files
- Edit or add a command file to mark closed
- Save and sync changes to update GitHub
Use File Explorer’s search box in the ghfs folder to quickly find issues by keywords.
Open an issue file, type your comment at the bottom, save, then sync.
If ghfs does not work as expected:
- Make sure your internet connection is active for syncing.
- Confirm that you signed in with the correct GitHub account.
- Check that the repository name is correct.
- Restart ghfs and try syncing again.
- Ensure you have permission to access the repository on GitHub.
- If the folder does not appear, try creating a new workspace inside ghfs.
New versions of ghfs may add features or fix issues. To update:

ghfs only accesses data you allow by signing in with GitHub. All data is stored locally on your PC. Internet access is only used for syncing with your GitHub account.
You control what information you share and when.
Inside the ghfs folder for each repository, you will find:
- Issues/ folder with files named by issue number and title
- PullRequests/ folder with PR files
- Each file contains the issue text, comments, and status
- Special metadata files to handle sync commands
This structure mimics GitHub but works offline.
Some advanced GitHub features like reactions and checklists might not fully work inside ghfs. It focuses on text and status changes.
Offline changes need syncing once you connect to the internet.
