PunkAPI

A FastAPI-based REST API serving as a digital archive of BrewDog's DIY Dog beers. It provides a paginated catalog of all beers, with detailed information about each one, including its name, description, recipe, and image.

All endpoints below are relative to the base URL above.

Endpoints

GET /beers

Returns a paginated list of beers.

Required: page (integer) – page number (e.g. ?page=1).

Supports the following optional query parameters:

per_page	integer	Items per page, from 10 to 80 (default: 30)
beer_name	string	Filter by name, use _ instead of spaces (e.g. punk_ipa)
ids	string	Filter by ids, comma-separated (e.g. 1,5,42)
brewed_before	string	Filter beers brewed earlier than the given date (MM-YYYY or YYYY)
brewed_after	string	Filter beers brewed later than the given date (MM-YYYY or YYYY)
abv_gt / abv_lt	number	Filter by ABV greater / less than the given value
ibu_gt / ibu_lt	number	Filter by IBU greater / less than the given value
ebc_gt / ebc_lt	number	Filter by EBC greater / less than the given value
food	string	Filter beers by food pairing

GET /beers/{id}

Returns a single beer by its numeric id. Use the id field from the beer object.

GET /beers/random

Returns a randomly selected beer from the catalog.

GET /images/{filename}

Returns the image for a beer. The filename is not always a numeric id – use the value from the image field of the beer object as-is.

Examples: images/001.png, images/336.png, images/keg.png

To get the correct image for a beer, read its image field from the JSON response and append it to the images/ path.

How It Works

The catalog data was extracted from the DIY Dog PDF and transformed into JSON and PNG files, stored in data/ and img/ folders respectively. The API itself is built with FastAPI and serves as an interface to interact with this data.

Note that image filenames are not always numeric – the image field in the JSON response reflects the actual filename (e.g. keg.png), which should be used as-is when constructing the image URL.

Background

This project was created as a replacement for the original PunkAPI, which was discontinued in 2024. Thanks to its developers and contributors for the great work.

The new version is built with modern tooling and includes the latest beer data from the catalogue DIY Dog v8 – all 415 beers, with reorganized and completed JSON and images. The v3 prefix in the base URL reflects this version history.
